Preserve Your Silk Sarees

Simple habits that protect your investment for decades to come

A well-maintained silk saree can last for generations, often becoming a treasured heirloom passed from mother to daughter. Yet many customers are unaware of how small daily habits can dramatically affect the lifespan and lustre of their silk collection. As custodians of fine textiles for over twenty-five years, the team at Soorya shares the essential care practices every silk saree owner should know.

Always store silk sarees in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can fade colours and weaken fibres over time. Wrap each saree in a soft cotton or muslin cloth rather than plastic, as plastic traps moisture and can encourage mildew growth. Avoid hanging silk sarees for long periods, as the weight of the fabric can distort the weave and stretch the border over time.

Pure silk sarees should always be dry cleaned, particularly those with heavy zari work, as water can tarnish real silver and gold thread. For lighter silk cotton blends, a gentle hand wash in cold water with mild detergent is acceptable, but always test on an inconspicuous corner first. Never wring silk fabric, as this damages the delicate fibres irreversibly.

•       Refold your sarees every few months along different lines to prevent permanent creasing at the same point.

•       Place a few neem leaves or camphor tablets near your saree storage to naturally repel moths and silverfish.

•       Air out silk sarees in shade, never direct sunlight, every two to three months to prevent musty odours.

•       Iron on the reverse side at low heat, using a thin cloth as a barrier between the iron and the silk.
