Authentic Kanjivaram sarees are woven using mulberry silk threads twisted together with real silver wire coated in gold, known locally as zari. This is what gives the saree its signature lustre and weight. Unlike machine-printed imitations flooding the market today, a genuine Kanjivaram is handwoven on traditional pit looms by artisans who often inherit this craft across generations.

The defining feature of a Kanjivaram is its korvai technique, where the body and border of the saree are woven separately in contrasting colours and then interlocked together with extraordinary precision. This is why you will notice a slightly zigzag join where the border meets the body on an authentic piece — a mark of true craftsmanship, not a flaw.

•       Run your fingers along the fabric — pure silk feels cool to the touch, never plastic-like or slippery.

•       Check the zari border closely under light. Real zari has a soft golden glow, while synthetic zari looks overly shiny or yellow.

•       Look for the contrasting korvai join between border and body, a hallmark of handwoven authenticity.

•       A genuine silk saree will have a slight rustle, known as a silk crunch, when gently scrunched in your hand.
